Frequently asked Questions
The following are the most popular questions asked about Bootstrapskin.
Bootstapskin isn't slow, though this website is!
Our website is slow because we demonstrate the entire library of Bootstrapskin products, which amounts to a whole heap of data for a browser to load. To get a fair comparision visit a website that uses Bootstrapskin but only uses a moderate quantity of extensions.
Bootstrapskin is packed with as many features and styling variations as we can get away with. Our goal has always been to ensure that websites that use our software do not look the same and to achieve this means including plenty of variation, hence the overly large bootstrap.css.
The main Bootstrapskin style is 770 kb, if you want to reduce this visit a css minifying service, this will reduce the style by 25%, resulting in a further increase in page load - with a potential 1 second page load.
Why we created Bootstrapskin
The goal of Bootstrapskin is to make Mediawiki more accessible to new developers who want to learn about Mediawiki, how to create new skins and Mediawiki extensions.
There are several tutorials to get you started, and include how to modify Bootstrapskin and create a custom skin of your own, how to create Mediawiki Special pages and how to create a basic extension.
See the Bootstrapskin/Tutorial menu item for details.
You'd be amazed at the amount of times we get asked this question.
All of our websites use Mediawiki, but its a testament to Bootstrapskin's power of transformation, that it can turn the ordinary and boring into something really cool.
Yes Bootstrapskin is stable, the current version 1.0.43 is the first completely stable version of the skin
Bootstrapskin started out as an extension which we developed into a skin. From its initial conception to its current form there have been fourty three developement versions, each removing either a bug or an issue.
We very much appreciate all feedback about Bootstrapskin, the developement process has always been to create a skin that people want. In almost every case, user feedback has contributed to new extensions and skin features.
Contact us with any feedback or ideas.
Well maintained and supported
Generally there is some kind of update to Bootstrapskin every week, though since September updates have been in the form of adding more functionality, such as extensions and plugins.
The next update of Bootstrapskin is likely to be in February 2015, when we update to Bootstrap 3.2.
Bootstrapskin is also very well supported, we have a support forum and users that know us well, can email us to resolve queries and for help modifying their skin.
Free to use sofware
In short it means you can download the software and use it exactly as you wish!
Though we always appreciate it when users keep the footer icon, you are not under any obligation to do so. We've even seen sites using Bootstrapskin, passing the work off as their own, perhaps not ethical but that's ok too
The only legal restriction is that you keep the licence intact (found in the root folder) which should always remain within the source files, even if you sell the software to someone else.
Yes you can hire Lee professionally. Any work associated with the Bootstrapskin project is also substantially reduced in price and all proceeds are used solely for project developement and services, this is our main source of income.
Developement fees are low to help us promote Bootstrapskin.
Other problems or requirements such as installing Mediawiki, Boostrapskin or extensions, as well as indentifying and solving problems is completely free of charge.
Helping a little, helps a lot
Promotion is the hardest part of running a successful start-up project and we need all the help we can get!

You can also help by nominating us for awards. The Bootstrapskin project was recently nominated for the prestigious Free Software Foundation's Award for the Advancement of Free Software - your nomination will add strength to others who have recommended us - see here for details.
